History of the Roaring Brook Inn

The Roaring Brook Inn was built as a private home in 1844 by Sylvester Rich, owner of the country store across the street. Located on the historic Catskill Turnpike, the house was built in the Greek Revival style typical of the time. In 1880, the house was sold to James Stoddard, a farmer from Delhi, as his retirement home. After Mr. Stoddard’s death the rooms were rented out. Local historians record that during this time chickens roamed freely through the house which rapidly fell into disrepair.

The house was restored to its former splendor by J. Frank Wheat, another owner of the general store, who bought it in 1902. Mr. Wheat’s daughter, Marion, and her husband Harry Barlow moved into the house after their marriage and raised four children in Treadwell. Mr. Barlow became the proprietor of the country store which still bears his name. The house was sold again in 1970 to Ruth and Cal Davidson. Jeanie and Artie Swenson purchased the home from the Davidson's in 2003 and opened it as Roaring Brook Inn in 2005.

The Inn will be closed the months of January and February. It is conveniently located near Oneonta, Delhi and Cooperstown.
